Scenic Course with Overcrowded Start
By James Blaser on May 11, 2022
Course was scenic, but definitely more hilly than expected.
Biggest complaint would be the start. All 4 events started together. A staggered start for the 5k and or 10k would have made it much more manageable. The park path leading out to the road was too small for that amount of runners, and even the road was congested for quite some time.
Some areas on the course were not the best marked, or needed volunteers to point runners in the right direction. I noticed two 10k runners who missed the turn off and had to back track from the half/full marathon course. I saw 2 additional runners miss a turn on the half/full course which shortened their run by a few miles.
Glad I only did the half and not the full. At about 13 miles in, the half turned left and the full went right. Would be terrible to see the finish line and realize you have another 13.1 for the full to do.They should have split the half/full course somewhere else.

tight start but pretty scenery

The Delaware Running Festival half starts at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park where there is a cool statue of Harriet Tubman. The course turns on to the walking path along the river. IT IS TIGHT. Maybe after about 200 yards you have to step off the sidewalk and turn on to streets. They are tight as well because these are old, colonial streets. Things open up after about 1.5 miles. The course rolls a little more than one might expect and there are also many (well-marked) turns. Just know you will likely not PR although the downhill at the end is nice. The part along the Brandywine Creek is really pretty. Cherry blossoms were in bloom. Packet pickup at a local hotel was pretty straightforward. I was able to find street parking for free up the hill from the park the day of the race. I don't recommend parking in the lot near the train station as traffic was all backed up there when I finished because it was so close to the start/finish line. I flew into Philadelphia Airport.

So good, I've already signed for next year!

I enjoyed this weekend's running festival for all the reasons runners like to travel. The event was perfectly produced and well attended. Friday's expo didn't get underway until 6pm (the only draw back for me), but otherwise was a smooth operation. I ran the Fort Meyers Challenge which included a 5K on Saturday held at nearby Dewey Beach. Great after party. Plenty of beers. Most of the participants stayed to the close of the party. The same could be said of Sunday's race (which included a Marathon and a 9K). The course was perfect! I could not be more pleased! Go to this one and be ready to enjoy yourself!
PS If you thought Delaware is for seafood, no! It's for Pizza!!! Grotto's is the best! Get some.

Gem of a Race

Tough course in spots but beautiful and worth it. The after party was fantastic - band, lots of food and drinks. UA long sleeve tech shirts and nice medals. A must do race :-)

Small race ran in a beautiful neighborhood. That last long hill will try to get you but there's an awesome downhill finish. Lots of good music and snacks along the course and finish line.
