Wet and windy on the Cape for 2019
By Richard Wein on March 4, 2019

My rating may be harsh but it reflects how my weekend went for the marathon. A highlight was that I got to hang out with Bill Rodgers multiple times (including during the 5k Fun Run with pizza and beers & during the expo book signing), but beyond that there were organizational issues. The expo was very limited. When I went to pick up merchandise that I had pre-purchased, I had to wait and re-visit the expo multiple times to get my items. I went to the spaghetti dinner that I feel I grossly overpaid for given what was provided.
The course is scenic (double loop) but became poor with heavy rain. The roads flooded in multiple areas making running very hazardous. The wind (which I expected somewhat) was tough on that day. Running a portion of the course on the side of the road on route 28 next to traffic in single file in the puddles was terrible. I cut my day short and did only the 1/2 marathon because I couldn’t risk getting hurt and jeopardize my Boston Marathon run.

Well organized, nice 2 loop course. Nice, small field..

Not enough food afterwards, some course issues

This course would have been very pretty with sun and calm winds. Unfortunately, I ran it (2019) with lots of rain, high 30s, significant wind near the shore, and that rain didn't always drain off the course. There were multiple sections where people got to play "dodge the big puddle", and other sections with "let's guess how to go around this street-wide section of standing water". Not the race director's fault, per se, but annoying. I do wish the food would have been more abundant and available longer. I saw employees wheel away unopened soup at about the equivalent of 5 hours into the full marathon. I realize most people were done by then, especially from the half, but it was a day where hot soup would have been a godsend.

Not a destination race but a good marathon if you're local

Relatively flat. Medal and food shared with half. Late start.

Beautiful course with good support. Two 13.1 mile loops around Cape Cod. Mildly hilly course with plenty of flats. Well organized from registration to finish line. The half marathon and 10K are much larger than the marathon. One of my favorite marathons.

Flat Course and Great Experience

Hyannis Marathon is a flat course. Sure there is wind but any course on any given day can be windy. The prior reviews I reluctantly read on MarathonGuide.com were written by some bitter folks unfortunately. Don't let those dissuade you from signing-up. Had the pleasure of running the last 1/3 or so of the marathon with another marathoner who could to have been any nicer. Really made this a memorable and fun experience.
