Small Town Feel to a Larger Race

The marathoners and half marathoners start together for the Marshall University Marathon. The people of Huntington are genuinely nice and everyone seemed happy to be working the event. The weather was perfect, a cool start, warming into the 60's by the time I finished. The marathon was a loop course so I was able to see my husband in the beginning miles and then again just after the half way point. Mainly run on sloped city streets but there were a handful of miles on a trail around a park. We were able to lay a flower at the fountain on the university campus in honor of those who lost their lives during the crash in the 70's. The highlight was running into Marshall University's football stadium and getting to finish carrying the football. Very unique and makes the ending special. Highly recommend!

Many runners suggested this race and they didn’t fail me. Although many said it was flat , I call it rolling hills (I live and train in Houston) . Well run and great atmosphere. Plenty of facilities at the start and plenty of parking
I will head back for sure

Nice Swag, Engaging Event

The placing of the flower at the fountain of the memorial was a touching experience. The stadium finish was cool. Parts of the course, like Ritter Park, were scenic along the Ohio River. Mostly flat. Nice swag, especially if you register early to get the jacket. There wasn't a lot of communication. It is a double loop course for the full marathon. It's a small town race so not a huge amount of spectator encouragement but easy to find your pace early on. Decent size field for a small town race.

Football Style Marathon

Best thing about this marathon was finishing on the Marshall University football field. I am not a big fan of double-loop courses and would probably only run the half marathon in the future. Excellent medal, amenities, and course support. Wonderful volunteers.

Great Small Race

Marshall Marathon is my hometown marathon so I am a bit partial. This was my 9th time running either the half or full. This race gets better each year. Great small race. Easy package pick up. Easy close to start/finish parking. Nice scenic, flat course with friendly competitors and great volunteers. A very cool finish in MU stadium and a cookout post race. This year we had about 1600 runners and 25ish maniacs. If you need WV it's a good one.

Small race - but some cool features

Double half marathon loop. 3-4 miles of it was a cinder path through a park. Lot's of deep puddles on the first lap, and running onto the grass presented a trip hazard. Much of the roads were crowned really steeply, so finding a flat spot to run was hard. But, on course support was great, traffic control among the best I have seen. Only about 250 marathon runners, and despite running about a 4:30 race, much of the second lap I was completely alone. Large parking lot at start/finish line.

Great little race

I really enjoyed this race. It was small, but with a lot of little extras. At the end of the race, you get to run with a flower to put on the memorial. You get to run down the field to the end one with a football. Such a neat experience.

This is my hometown marathon, so I am partial. This marathon just keeps getting better. From swag to finish line, this marathon is a great one. Flat fast course, fun happy competitors. It's the little marathon that could.

Extremely Impressed!

I did not have great expectations for this marathon, but was pleasantly surprised. Wasn't too excited about running the course twice but I didn't find it repetitive and loved running on the crushed limestone path along the tree lined route, across from beautiful homes and along Ritter Park. Running through the campus was a plus the halfers didn't get to experience. The carnation we received after mile 25 we placed at the memorial fountain. Carrying the football and running on the field was an extra added plus. The jacket, hat and carry on bag were great give aways. The age group awards were either glass bowls or vases made by a local glass company that has been in business for over 100 years. We flew into Cincinnati and drove through the majestic foothills of the Alleghenies. No flatness anywhere around the course but this race is even flatter than Chicago which is flat. Kudos to the Race committee and volunteers. I've run over 120, and glad I ran MUM.

Easy West Virginia Race
By Deanna Grimes on March 9, 2018

If you want to knock off West Virginia with few hills and for a fairly cheap price then Marshall is the way to go. It was rather warm (2017) or at least warmer that you would have expected. The course is nice although it is a 2 loop course for those who don't like that. It is not completely flat so you do hit a decent size hill twice. The second loop can also be rather lonesome. I didn't think they kept the "finish" line food/beer open long enough. I finished just past 4:30, I waiting on some friends to finish. By the time our 5 hour finisher finished we got the last 2 beers. The food wasn't that great. 2017 they switched to a Pull over and the jackets from previous years were much nicer. I did enjoy the race but it would be nicer if it was a Saturday. There isn't much to do in Huntington on a Sunday.

Excellent SWAG and flat course

This is close to my hometown, so I am biased, but I don't think too biased. After doing so many marathons around the USA, I know what I like. 26.2 miles is 26.2 miles, so the distance is the same. Overall, this was a flat course. Ran through the local park as well as the university area. This was a double loop, which I don't like. What I really really like - the race director emailed/messaged on Facebook quite a bit, and kept you aware of what was going on with the race. Also, the quarter zip tech jacket was very nice. I also did the "Shakeout 5k" race the day before and the hoodie was very nice. Good time and good race. I don't do this every year, but always happy when I do it.

Marshall University Marathon (MUM)
By Tara Cavaness on November 13, 2017

I ran the 2017 MUM and was worried I would be bored with it being a 2 loop course. However, I was surprised by the beauty of the course. The fall colors were at peak and the weather was 70 degrees. Enjoyed running by the Ohio river, a bit through town and Ritter Park. Ritter park was shaded on a soft dirt pathway, this was a treat to the feet. Finishing the MUM we received carnation flowers and a football to bring in the big finish. I would highly recommend this marathon not only for the beauty of the course but also for a well organized overall experience. If you run it in the future, check out the "shake out" 5k the day before. You run through Springhill Cemetery, memorial site of the victims of the Marshall University Football team, and coaches who lost their lives in 1970 plane crash. It was very emotional and a beautiful cemetery.

Yes WV has a flat marathon!

Double loop course thru small urban town during fall color. Usually the temps start at mid 39s and finish in low 60s. For 2017 it started in the mid 50s and finished in the low 79s if you are a 5-6 hr finisher. Lots of Maniacs and 50 staters. Good water stations but I didn’t see any first aid stations. Right before the finish, you can pick up a vinyl football and run with it 100 yards to the finish where they have a goal post just for you. Nice shirts and if you register early you get a very nice pullover/jacket. Stay at Hampton Inn, not the Pullman Plaza.

Marshall University Marathon is awesome!

This is a great event. Very well organized and executed. Awesome volunteers at the very frequent water stations. The course is mostly flat and free of car traffic. The finish on the soft astroturf on the football field feels fantastic and you can run to the finish with a souvenir football! Great event!! Highly recommend the Marshall Hall of Fame Cafe for meals, beer and football!

Marshall University Marathon

This race was pretty well supported and the course was nice. The problems were that the course wasn't always marked well and there were a couple of times when I didn't know which way to go. After the race there was very little food. It was a really hot day and it would've been nice if there was some fruit (other than bananas) and ice. I couldn't even find ice at the med tent. When my friend finished, we went to get a beer and there were only 2 left. At that point, the race, which had a six hour limit, still had 45 minutes to go. I did love running the football across the finish line and the fact that all the race photos are free.
