Great Small and Scenic Race
By Steve Felson on October 22, 2023

This is a small race but is run like a big city race. The course has some rolling hills but no real sharp up or down hills. The scenery is just beautiful which slowed my time as I stopped to take some pictures. Plenty of fluid stations and port-a-potties and enthusiastic volunteers. Transportation to start line was painless and there was a school gym open to wait in so you didn't have to stand in the cold. One of the best features is that you finish at the college and they have the locker rooms open so you can take a shower. The town is a great little place to explore and there is a pasta dinner the night before the race. All in all, a very enjoyable experience.

Beautiful Course with a Wicked Hill

This race features a beautiful course that runs along the side of a scenic river for most of the race. There were a few rolling hills throughout the course but nothing too bad until mile 22, where some twisted (and ingenious) course designer plotted a steep hill - in a cemetery, no less! The best part was the water stop around mile 23.5, which was manned by the Keene Trail Runners and featured Jaeger & Fireball shots. The heart of the race is director Alan Stroshine and the Keene Rotary Club. The level of support from the community was amazing, especially for such a relatively small race!

Great organization and support.

Second year doing this one. I came back because it was such a great experience from the start to the finish.
Nice course with really nice views during the majority or the race. Running through a grave yard was interesting! It's net down hill with a few bumps but nothing to difficult. There was the climb out of the graveyard which felt worse than it really was due to the fact it was toward the end or the race.
It's point to point so you're bused to a small school for the start. Last year was cooler and they keep the school open so it was nice to have a place to keep warm.
The finish is great. You'll finish at Keene State college with a lot of spectators for what is probably considered a smallish race. Great finish line amenities from food to massage to use of the showers in the campus gymnasium. A great luxury since I had a 2 hour drive home. If your looking for a fall race or a N.H. marathon I'd highly recommend this one.

Must Do Fall Race

This is a must do fall race. Absolutely the best race management and volunteers hands down. The weather was perfect and the course is fast. There are a few small hills but the majority of the course is a gentle downhill with beautiful views.

Very nice!

The people were so friendly! Nice, small, well organized race. Rolling hills. I love any race with fresh baked cookies and watermelon at the finish! :) Being able to stay inside the school (with a DJ, bottled water, and yoga mats) at the start was great! I hate being bussed somewhere then being forced to stand around outside in the cold.

Beautiful scenery. Great community

The race provided beautiful fall colors and scenery. The volunteers were great and the community support amazing. Was disappointed however that for a marathon there was nothing but water and Powerade the entire 26.2 miles. There were however three fantastic neighbors at around 23-24 who did have some food which was very welcomed

Great Race!

It’s net downhill. There is still uphill but the worst is around mile 13-14. More of the elevation loss is in the first half. Course is pretty scenic until the end. It’s a smaller race maybe 3-400 of us did the full. You park on a college campus and take a shuttle bus to the start get to wait in an elementary school until a few minutes before the start. When you finish youre maybe a block from the college gym and you can use the showers after. One more nice little thing, today was my 40th state which evidently when I registered I had answered that question so I got bib number 40. Would definitely recommend the race and I’m highly considering coming back

Nice added touch that when you register they will ask you what state you are on and try to coordinate your bib number with your state or overall marathon number.

Clarence Demar Marathon, Keene NH

Loved this race, so grateful that the race director decided on an early start rather than cancelling due to the hot weather. The course is beautiful, plenty of water/gatorade stations, well marked course. This is a smaller race with a nice pre race dinner and having Dave McGillvray as a speaker made it very special. A 50 States reunion race meant lots of 50 staters, Maniacs, Fanatics. Nice medals, and age group prizes were nice, a glass and a copy of Clarence Demar's book. All in all a very well run race. Would definitely recommend this race!!!

Well Done!

It's a small race in a beautiful part of the country. Ease to race start buses and finish line were within walking distance of the host host hotel - courtyard Marriott
It was hot this year but the RD Team Nd the community stepped out to really help us complete the race - extra water stops and spraying hoses were crucial and so welcome.
Highly recommend

High quality smaller marathon

This is a high quality smaller marathon and half marathon put on in southwestern New Hampshire. This event is very well organized with all the runners’ needs taken care of throughout. The course is largely downhill alongside a river for the first five miles. From there it is primarily rolling along country roads until you came into Keene for the last four miles. Runners are bussed to the start of each event. The marathon staging point was a small elementary school about 5 minute walk to the starting line. Runners were able to stay inside until almost the start. The finish was on the Keene State campus on a tree shaded lane. There were limited people cheering along the course, but if you have family following you, they should be able to see you in multiple places. Perhaps the only negatives are: limited reasonably priced hotels in the area and no expo at all.
